Come learn about local projects that are helping their communities through sustainable and locally grown food.
First, we welcome Nina Bennett (P4C member) and Emmarie Burger, both board members of the Prairie Food Co-op based in Lombard. Nina and Emmarie will be speaking about our food system as it exists globally, nationally, and locally and why local communities, including our own, are working to transform and revitalize it from the ground up. Globalization and consolidated interests rule our food distribution system to the point that most of the food we eat is shipped from far away at great expense. Myriad ways of supporting local food movements will be explored, and how food co-ops in general, and specifically, Prairie Food Co-op, can have a positive impact on communities.
Then we’ll hear from Paula Deacon Garcia, P4C member, DuPage County Board Member, and Chair of the Lisle Township Food Pantry Garden. This garden feeds clients at the food pantry as well as provides an opportunity for community members and groups to get involved and learn about sustainability and how to be food secure. Community gardens improve neighborhoods and communities by promoting healthy lifestyles, increasing grass-roots partnerships, and more.
