Trans Christian leader The Rev M Barclay on gender identity, and Sharon Jensen LCSW with help managing challenging emotions in tough times.
Welcome to P4C's June Monthly meeting! P4C Chair Debbie Sandstrom will briefly discuss P4C's ongoing and upcoming efforts to support the Black Lives Matters movement before introducing this month's guest speakers.
The Rev. M Barclay (they/them) is director of the Christian ministry enfleshed and was the first openly nonbinary person to become a deacon in the United Methodist Church. They have extensive experience in writing, preaching, and teaching on Christianity and its relationship to queer and trans lives, feminism, white anti-racism, and other pressing matters of justice today.
Born and raised in the deep south, M comes from a fundamentalist faith background and has spent much of their adult life unlearning both toxic theologies and social norms. An outspoken critic of the Trump Administration's efforts to roll back rights and recognition of the trans community and the broader LGBTQ community, M is a leader with the UMForwardCollective and formerly served as Director of Communications at Reconciling Ministries Network. They have also enjoyed working as a hospital chaplain, youth director, justice associate and faith coordinator for reproductive justice in Texas.
Sharon Jensen LCSW will discuss the psychology of effective communication with others through emotional regulation—what it means, how we can cultivate it, and what methods we can choose to implement emotional management in real life during these challenging times.
Sharon has had specialized training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), trauma treatment and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), as well as brain based strategies for mental health management. Her decades of experience include extensive experience providing mental health therapy and support to many diverse populations as well as training, supervising, and mentoring developing clinicians.
