P4C Monthly Meeting: Health equity in Chicago – Past, Present, and Future

Dr Raj C. Shah (Rush University Medical Center) and Prof. Fernando De Maio (DePaul University / American Medical Association), co-Founding Directors of the Center for Community Health Equity will discuss their work at the Center, a partnership that for the past 6+ years has sought to improve community health outcomes and contribute to the elimination of health inequities in Chicago.

About the speakers:

Raj C. Shah, MD: As a geriatrician at Rush University Medical Center and an Associate Professor at the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center for over 20 years, Dr. Shah’s academic interest is the design of systems to conduct community-based clinical trials for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of common age-related conditions in diverse older adults.

Fernando De Maio, PhD: Director of Research and Data Use at the American Medical Association’s Center for Health Equity, and a Professor of Sociology at DePaul University, where he teaches data analysis in the MPH program. His research and teaching interests lie primarily within medical sociology and social epidemiology, with a focus on the concept of structural violence. His work has been guided by the notion of 'radical statistics' – the idea that statistical analysis can be used to not just describe the world, but to change it.
